Maybe what inspired Joshua Onysko to found Pangea Organics, purveyor of soaps and lotions is that he grew up in West Warwick, not far from Bradford Soap Works; after all, all of West Warwick is not far from Bradford Soap Works. But if you ask him his inspirations, he cites his family.
"My parents always taught me that anything was possible, if I worked hard enough I could make anything happen,” he says. That hard work was exemplified by his grandfather. “He was defiantly an inspiration for me,” Joshua says.
“He was the 2nd generation of dairy farmers of Midville Dairy.” When the RI dairy business declined, and armed with only an 8th grade education, Joshua’s grandfather started reading books and studying landscape architecture. “With no previous training he built Midville Country Club, the state’s number 1 public 9 hole golf course.”
At 19, Onysko moved to Jackson Hole, WY and spent several years there snowboarding and working as a baker and blacksmith. One night he had a dream that he was riding on the tops of trains in India. Being the spontaneous man that he is, he bought a one-way ticket to Bombay the next morning – and from that day, always chose the road less traveled.
Before his departure to Bombay, he stopped back home to visit his understandably frantic mother. While there, he decided to bond with her and make soap before he left on his journey. They created a batch of soap with oatmeal and Italian bergamot, cut it up and gave it away to friends and family before Joshua hopped a plane to Bombay.
After traveling all over Asia and other exotic locations, Joshua and his friend Tom sat together on the steps of Angkor Wat and discussed his dreams of starting an institute to aid corporations becoming more socially responsible and environmentally sound. With his friend’s encouragement to become an exemplary model for other companies and to use a portion of the profits to fund a non-profit, Pangea Organics was born.
It was Joshua’s personal devotion and commitment to inspiring social sustainability that sparked the inception of Pangea Organics. He devised the highest quality organic personal care products as a means to an even greater end.
Never straying from the vision to create “Ecocentric Bodycare: Always Beneficial, Never Artificial”, Joshua’s goals revolve around reinventing the way we nurture our bodies and raising the bar for other companies to do the same.
Just take a walk inside the Pangea Organics facility in Boulder, Colorado and you will be transported to a world that most thought impossible to achieve in order to have a sustainable, profitable business…
Innovation ahead of its time with the creation of the first ever, 100% compostable, biodegradable, plantable product packaging. This means zero waste, and the ability to create your own medicinal herb garden while simultaneously giving yourself a facial.
A 100% wind powered facility with carpeting made from recycled soda bottles and walls painted in non-VOC paint
Recycled furniture & packaging supplies, and even edible and biodegradable packing “peanuts”
Soap cartons made from 100% post-consumer paper that can be composted, facial care in bottled glass (the most recyclable material available) and body care in #2 HDPE plastic – plus all bottles are screen-printed, saving on label waste. Even Pangea products themselves begin to biodegrade within 48 hours of use.
Offering all employees a living wage of $12.50 per hour, full healthcare coverage and an eco-pass on the Colorado transit system
At Pangea, they’re not only concerned about what goes on our bodies, but also how their chosen products and the ingredients impact the environment before and after use - including the packaging.
Instead of using paper or plastic labels on our Liquid Hand Soaps, Shower Gels and Hand & Body Lotions, the company screen prints all of the bottles, eliminating over 40% of manufacturing waste created by printing labels.
Pangea’s entire skincare line is also packaged in brown or green glass which is done in order to keep the UV rays out, which can diminish the quality and effectiveness of a truly natural and organic product. The brown or green glass, therefore, plays a critical role in supporting and maintaining the brand’s All Natural Preservative System. Glass is also the only container that can be recycled forever.
Pangea was the first skincare company in the world to create plantable packaging. All of their product boxes are manufactured using a zero-waste process that uses water and 100% post-consumer newspaper. Folded origami style - without glues and dyes - this packaging is 100% biodegradable compostable and plantable. All you need to do with this box is soak it in water for one minute and plant about 1-2 inches deep in soil. Pretty soon you’ll have medicinal herbs found in Pangea products springing up right before your eyes.
To promote wellness among the Pangea staff, Joshua developed the Pangea Garden located just 10 steps away from the front doors of the Pangea facility. Created as a place for employees to gather and grow their own organic garden, people from all aspects of the business gather together to maintain and benefit from this garden of Zen. Whether taking time on a Friday to irrigate and plant, or stopping by for a fresh veggie option for a mid-day snack, this educational and inspiring garden is just one part of Joshua’s bigger goal – to create an educational institute that is dedicated to sustainable living.
With that dream now becoming a reality, Joshua has tirelessly worked to ensure a generous portion of Pangea’s profits fund the Pangea Institute, an emerging non-profit dedicated to researching and teaching all aspects of sustainable living and business practices.
Joshua has come a long way from that very first bar of soap Joshua and his mother made together before he left for India. But in a way, he never left it. The soap they made is still in production today and remains one of Pangea’s top sellers: Oatmeal with Italian Bergamot.
